राजा बलि और माता लक्ष्मी असुरों का राजा बलि १०० यज्ञ पूर्ण कर अजेय हो गया। धरती पर अपना साम्राज्य स्थापित कर वह स्वर्ग का सिंहासन प्राप्त करने की तैयारी करने लगा। यह ज्ञात होने पर देवराज इंद्र चिंतित हो गए और भगवान विष्णु की शरण में पहुँचे। इंद्र ने भगवान विष्णु से स्वर्ग का सिंहासन बचाने की प्रार्थना की. तब वामन अवतार धारण कर भगवान विष्णु राजा बलि के दरबार में गए और उनसे भिक्षा की याचना की. राजा बलि दानवीर था. उसने वामन अवतार भगवान विष्णु को वचन दिया कि वह भिक्षा में जो भी मांगेगा, उसे प्रदान किया जायेगा। भगवान विष्णु ने भिक्षा में तीन पग भूमि मांग ली. राजा बलि ने अपना वचन निभाते हुए वामन अवतार भगवान विष्णु को तीन पग भूमि दान में प्रदाय कर दी और कहा कि वह तीन पग भूमि नाप ले। भगवान विष्णु ने पहले पग में पृथ्वी को नाप लिया और दूसरे पग में स्वर्ग को. तीसरे पग के पूर्व ही राजा बलि भांप चुका था कि उसके समक्ष उपस्थित वामन कोई साधारण व्यक्ति नहीं है. उसने अपना शीश वामन रूपी भगवान विष्णु के आगे झुका दिया और उनसे तीसरा पग अपने शीश पर रखने का निवेदन दिया। भगवान विष्णु ने वैसा ही किया।इस त...
